The Lodge was founded in 1907 and aims to empower members to the best they can be – it’s about building character, enabling people to make new friendships, and helping them make a positive contribution to society and valuable contributions to charitable causes.
Charity is of great importance in freemasonry. In 2019 The Old Cheltonian Lodge formed a Trust Fund for the purposes of providing bursaries, scholarships and other support for students at Cheltenham College based on merit, as well other educational activities benefiting pupils of the College. Most recently, the Lodge contributed £15,000 (match funded to £30,000) to the Guy Dodd Bursary Endowment Fund, created in memory of Guy Dodd (H, 1959, College staff 1966-1982, Leconfield Housemaster 1977-82, College Council 1999-2005).
The Lodge meets in London twice a year, followed by dinner, and once a year at Cheltenham College, usually on a Saturday evening followed by dinner to which the Head, or senior member of the Common Room, as well as wives and partners are invited.
Membership of the Old Cheltonian Lodge is open to men over 18 who have a strong association with College, either as an Old Cheltonian, member of staff, or parent.

Whilst it is not possible yet for women to join the Old Cheltonian Lodge, freemasonry for women is very strong with two women-only Grand Lodges: The Order of Women Freemasons and HFAF – Freemasonry for Women. For more information please visit the Freemasonry for Women page on the Old Cheltonian Lodge website.
