Stephen Charles Oxlade (College staff 1983-1991)

Stephen Oxlade (Chemistry teacher and master in charge of Rowing) passed away peacefully on 16 June 2026, aged 81, following a short illness.

Stephen Oxlade (Chemistry teacher and master in charge of Rowing, 1983-1991) passed away peacefully on 16 June 2026, aged 81, following a short illness.

The following is an abridged version of Stephen’s farewell in The Cheltonian 1991, written by Barry Wild (Head of Science 1982-2010):

Stephen Oxlade came to Cheltenham from Monkton Combe in 1983 to teach chemistry and to be master in charge of rowing. In both areas he proved himself to be a teacher with great patience and concern for his pupils. During his time the Boat Club has expanded considerably; girls' rowing was introduced; many more boys now row; there are more coaches and the fleet of boats has improved in both quality and quantity. Much of this was due to Stephen's quiet, behind-the-scenes efforts. Cheltenham College is a much more respected name in rowing circles than it was in 1983, and SCO can take credit for that.

In the laboratory he showed the same qualities of patience. He introduced geology as a Lower Sixth general studies course and it was always a popular option.

Always very sociable and keen to be involved, he was a loyal tutor in Leconfield, he ran the Common Room bar, played cricket for the Common Room XI and was a keen supporter of walking trips in the Lake District. He was very warmly regarded by both pupils and staff.

The following tribute has been provided by Stephen’s family:

A devoted husband to De, a much-loved father to Simon and Edward, and a proud grandfather to Lara, Stephen’s family was at the centre of his life. He will be remembered for his kindness, quiet humour, and the deep care he showed to those closest to him.

Stephen gave many years to teaching, inspiring countless students as a Chemistry teacher and rowing coach at Shiplake College, Pangbourne College, Monkton Combe School, Cheltenham College, and Bryanston School. He had a natural gift for encouraging others – whether in the classroom or on the water – and took great pride in seeing young people grow in confidence and skill.

Away from work, Stephen felt most at home in the outdoors. He embraced adventure wholeheartedly, whether walking in the Lake District, exploring the Scottish islands, or making his way along the southern coastal path. He relished time spent on rowing tours, by the water with a fishing rod, or camping under open skies. These were the moments that brought him real joy, especially when shared with family and friends.

Those who knew Stephen will remember his steady presence, his generosity of spirit, and his love of nature and simple pleasures. He had a way of bringing calm and perspective, and his quiet enthusiasm for life’s pursuits left a lasting impression on many.

Stephen will be greatly missed, fondly remembered, and always loved.
