Martin Andrews, son of the late Bryan Andrews (H, 1927) and brother of Paddy Andrews (H, 1961), died on 20 August 2025, aged 83.

The following tribute has been written by Paddy.

Many years ago, at prep school, I was confronted by a burly ten-year-old Irish boy [the late Christopher Hoole (H, 1959)] who demanded to know, ‘Are you Big Andrews or Baby Andrews?’ ‘Baby Andrews’ I squeaked, and fled.

Throughout our childhood and adolescence, Martin was Big Andrews to me – my guide and mentor, my sounding board – but after art college and publishing, as Art Editor, of the Illustrated London News, Martin eventually, and perhaps reluctantly, returned to the fold and the family business, Kelpie Boat Services in Pembroke Dock, whereas I flitted round Switzerland and France like the unicorn that didn’t board Noah’s Ark.

Martin was naturally a talented gardener; I remember our mother once reporting a big fruit on her courgette plant and he responded with, ‘Oh I’m overrun with the damn things.’

His humour was special, very much on the lines of the comedian Jack Dee, and he tended to emerge abruptly from apparent torpor with a pungent and funny remark. At College he was briefly nicknamed ‘Bolsh’ as, instead of ‘Yes Sir, no Sir, three bags full Sir’ when given an order, he would say, ‘Why?’

I’ll miss you – we’ll all miss you – Big Andrews. May your immortal soul rest in peace.
