Julian Proctor, brother of the late Nicholas Proctor (NH, 1960), died on 24 March 2021, aged 79. The following tribute has been provided by Julian’s family.

Julian was born in Cheltenham, England, a son of the late lan Robert Proctor and Jean Gertrude Bremner. After attending the Junior School and College, Julian graduated from medical school and obtained his PhD in London, before moving to Canada as a Senior Investigator based out of McGil University Medical School in Montreal. From there he went to Pittsburgh to complete a residency in Radiation Oncology at Allegheny General Hospital, during which he met his wife and daughter while visiting a close friend in Washington DC.

He then spent four years at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Julian returned to New Castle, PA and dedicated the rest of his career to Jameson Memorial Hospital and helped create the UPMC [University of Pittsburg Medical Center] Cancer Center. He remained involved with multiple UPMC Cancer Centers around the area until his retirement from clinical work in 2017, after which he continued to be involved doing accreditation site visits for the American College of Radiology until 2020. Over his many years of service Julian also earned fellowships with the American College of Radiology (ACR) and American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO).

Julian could best be described as a humble, funny and immensely interesting, brilliant man. His exuberant and witty personality shone through in all and everything he did. An avid global explorer, researcher, physician, author, storyteller, outdoorsman and sportsman, whenever an opportunity to enjoy life was presented Julian was ‘bloody well in!’ Whether travelling, golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, playing hockey, kayaking, white water rafting or foraging the woods for potentially poisonous mushrooms, Julian loved being active and outdoors and with friends and family. A good friend put it best by saying, ‘Julian you are not just a friend ... you are an adventure.’

Known as the ‘Good Doctor’ for his amazing bedside manner, Julian always made time for his patients regardless of his own personal adventure of the day. His thoughtfulness and desire to help people went well beyond the walls of the hospitals and his touch was felt by an extensive group of friends and family. Those who knew him understand it would take too many pages to tell the full story of his rich life. Julian will be fondly missed and remembered as a wonderful brother, husband, father, healer and friend to all.
